Core Focus on Rational Numbers & Equations Understanding Integers Lesson 2.1

Warm-Up 1)Draw a number line from 0 to 10. Graph 4, 7.5, and on the number line. 2)Find the value of each expression. a. b

Understanding Integers Graph integers and their opposites on a number line. Compare and order integers. Lesson 2.1

Vocabulary Negative Numbers Numbers used to represent the values less than zero. Positive Numbers Any number greater than zero. Opposites Two numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but on opposite sides of zero. Example: 3 and –3 are opposites

Example 1 Find and graph the opposite of each integer. a.2 b.6 2 units 6 units

Vocabulary Integers Set of all positive whole numbers, their opposites and zero. Absolute Value The distance that number is from zero on a number line. Good to Know! Integers are used in everyday situations. Positive integers are associated with gains, increases, and deposits. Negative integers are associated with losses, decreases, and withdrawals. Negative integers are also used to describe something that is below sea level while positive integers describe something above sea level.

Example 2 Find each absolute value. a. b. 4 units from 0 3 units from 0

Example 3 Write an integer to represent each situation. a.Death Valley, California is 282 feet below sea level. Answer: –282 b.The stock market gained 5 points yesterday. Answer: 5 c.Patrice withdrew $15 from her savings account. Answer: –15

Good to Know! On a number line, the numbers get larger as you go from left to right. On the number line below, the integer represented by the letter A is the smallest integer marked in the number line. Point E represents the largest integer marked on the number line.

Example 4 Complete each statement using. a. –4 0Since –4 is to the left of 0 on the number line, –4 < 0 b. –3 –5Since –3 is to the right of –5 on the number line, –3 > –5 c. –6 7Because –6 is to the left of 7 on the number line, –6 < 7.

Example 5 The five states with the lowest temperatures on record are shown in the table below. List and graph the temperatures from least to greatest. When the temperatures are graphed on the number line, the lowest temperature will be furthest to the left. The highest temperature will be furthest to the right. Listed from least to greatest: –80, –70, –69, –66, –61

Communication Prompt Why is it important to have both positive and negative numbers to describe real-world situations?

Exit Problems 1.Find the opposite of 5. 2.Graph the following numbers on a number line: 3, −6, 0 and −2. 3.Find the value of |8|. 4.Write an integer to represent the following: The buried treasure was 7 feet below the ground. Complete each statement with. 5.0 −11 6.−45 −54 −5 8 −7 < >
