Expository Writing

Expository Writing Expository writing is a type of writing, the purpose of which is to inform, explain, describe, or define the author's subject to the reader. Background

Expository Writing Example from the article The Amish dress in a very simple style, avoiding all but the most basic ornamentation. Clothing is made at home of plain fabrics and is primarily dark in color. Amish men in general wear straight-cut suits and coats without collars, lapels or pockets. Trousers never have creases or cuffs and are worn with suspenders. Belts are forbidden, as are sweaters, neckties and gloves. Men's shirts fasten with traditional buttons in most orders, while suit coats and vests fasten with hooks and eyes. Background

Expository Writing Objective Vivid Precise Background

Expository Writing Objective Being objective means when you write an expository essay, it should not reveal the opinion of yourself. The use of first-person pronouns should be avoided. Background

Expository Writing What is that? Precise Being clear means the creator of an expository text can’t assume that the reader or listener has prior knowledge or prior understanding of the topic that is being discussed. One important point is to try to use words that clearly show what they are talking about rather than blatantly telling the reader what is being discussed. What is that?

Expository Writing Precise Example: He gave me a nice smile. He gave me a welcoming smile. A career in city planning offers many things. A career in city planning offers many rewards. Try pairing a trainee with an individual with technical experience. Try pairing a trainee with an experienced technician. Background

Expository Writing Precise Exercise: I had a nice weekend with my folks. I think about you often. Take Mr. Benson for English; he’s nice. Mitchell had another bad day at work. This time, let’s go to an interesting movie. I tried to practice my speech, but it sounds stupid. What’s wrong? You sound funny today. You will make a great father someday. relaxing everyday kind and easygoing discouraging action-packed disorganized upset loving Background

Expository Writing Vivid Being vivid means describing something in a vivid way so that others can see it, hear it, smell it, touch it, and taste it. The hot, yellow sun went behind the mountain and covered the valley in red. The sun cut itself on a sharp peak and bled into the valley.—John Steinbeck Background

Expository Writing Vivid She was super hero beautiful. Her hair was as black as coal, her lips red as blood. Megan Fox Background

Prompt Writing (Group Activity) Instructions: I’ll pass each student a piece of paper. Each paper contains an important person X. Don’t share your paper with other students. Write down the description for the person you’ve seen. The description should only be based on the picture. Don’t add other prior information if you know the person. Others will guess who the person is from your description. Goal: Describe something objectively, precisely, and vividly. Background

Background

Writing Assignment: Take the article we have learned in class as an example, write an expository essay that describes at least three aspects from your country’s culture. It could be the dressing, education, family life, or whatever you like to cover. Background
