Abraham, Twelve Patriarchs

Abram Called God begins his plan with Abraham (75 years old) God will build a nation he can call “His Own” God gives Abraham a promise: – Gen 12:1-3 1The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. 2"I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

Abram’s Family Tree

Abraham’s Covenant Confirmed Abraham is 90 years old – Gen 15: As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. 14But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure."

Isaac Born Abraham is 100 years old – Gen 21:3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.

Abraham’s Family Tree

Jacob Born Two nations born to Isaac (at 60 years old) Esau – Edomites Jacob - Israelites – Gen 25: When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 25The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau. 26After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

Abraham’s Family Tree

The Twelve Patriarchs Born Jacob fathered 12 sons Two wives (Leah and Rachel) Two concubines (Bilhah and Zilpah) – Gen 35: The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun. 24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. 25The sons of Rachel's maidservant Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali. 26The sons of Leah's maidservant Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

Abraham’s Family Tree

Joseph in Egypt Joseph sold into slavery by brothers Imprisoned falsely / Interprets Pharaoh's dream Elevated to 2 nd in command of Egypt – Gen 41: So Pharaoh asked them, "Can we find anyone like this man, one in whom is the spirit of God?" 39Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. 40You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you." 41So Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt."

Jacob’s Family Moves to Egypt The twelve sons (Patriarchs) of Jacob now in Egypt Given the best land (Goshen) by Pharaoh They multiply greatly – Gen 45:7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

Who Move’s To Egypt?

Jacob’s Family Moves to Egypt

Israelites Are Enslaved A later Pharaoh doesn’t know Joseph (& family) Start being threatened by growth and success Enslave them as a result – Exod 1:6-8 6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died, 7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied greatly and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them. 8 Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.

430 years pass…

God Calls Moses to Save Israelites Just the right period of time passes God planned the timing when the nation was ready – Exod 3:4-8 4When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am." 5"Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." 6Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey--

The Israelites Leave Egypt It took 10 plagues to convince Pharaoh – Exod 12:31 31During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, "Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the LORD as you have requested. – Exod 12:41 41At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the LORD's divisions left Egypt. God commands the Passover to ‘remember’ being saved God’s people leave with MONEY! (They take it from Egyptians) – Exod 12: The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36The LORD had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.

God’s New Nation They cross the Red Sea to complete the deliverance from the Egyptians They are now free, have money, and need to develop from slaves to a nation About 40 years in the desert will do that!
