Vincent Van Gogh Techniques and style

Facts of Van Gogh Very emotional, always showed a state of his mind in his art Painted all day and stayed out all night Mental status became unhealthy, art shows this as well Put himself into an asylum and when he got out of the asylum he shot himself

His use of Color Color was his tool for expression Color was symbolic (expressed his emotions or mental states) Used brush strokes that were short and expressive

How can color express an idea: Lighter values can express soft moodsLighter values can express soft moods Darker values can express angerDarker values can express anger Cool colors can express sadnessCool colors can express sadness Warm colors can express happinessWarm colors can express happiness

Values What are Values? –One of the elements of art ( tools to use in organizing your art) –Different shades of lights and darks –Can be expressive (tell an emotion.) look at our example.Is it sad (use of more darker tones)
