Chapter 6 Value and Texture

Goals Differentiate between the use of value and texture in illustrative art Get a handle on the various attributes of strokes and fills Master the use and modification of Illustrator brush types and the Paintbrush tool Explore the differences and uses of filters, effects, and graphic styles Understand the steps for creating and applying patterns

About Value and Texture Value is the relationship of light and dark parts within an image, sometimes referred to as tone, shade, or brightness. Texture implies surface: –How an object might feel if we were to touch it Rough, smooth, soft

Stroke and Fill Attributes Stroke variations include color, weight (line thickness), solid or dashed lines, line caps and joins, and brush styles. Fill variations include transparency, gradients, patterns, and filters and effects.

Brush Types

The Appearance Panel Use the Appearance panel to keep track of your stroke and fill attributes.

Lesson 1: The Fish Painting Discover how to apply brush styles, graphic styles, and effects in this lesson.

Summary Value and texture can bring your drawings to life. Strokes and fills have many variations for applying value and texture to artwork in Illustrator. You can create your own brushes and patterns in Illustrator.
