The Faith of a Gentile Woman

The more I studied Jesus the more difficult it became to pigeonhole him. He said little about the Roman occupation, the main topic of conversation amongst his countrymen, yet he took up a whip to drive out petty profiteers from the Jewish Temple. He urged obedience to the Mosaic Law while acquiring the reputation as a law breaker. He could be stabbed by sympathy for a stranger, yet turn on his best friend with the rebuke, “Get behind me, Satan.” He had uncompromising views on rich men and loose women, yet both types enjoyed his company. Philip Yancey The Jesus I Never Knew.

Mark 7:24-30 The Faith of a Gentile Woman Then Jesus left Galilee and went north to the region of Tyre. He didn’t want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn’t keep it a secret. He didn’t want anyone to know which house he was staying in, but he couldn’t keep it a secret. Right away a woman who had heard about him came and fell at his feet. Her little girl was possessed by an evil spirit, and she begged him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Mark 7:24-30 The Faith of a Gentile Woman Jesus told her, “First I should feed the children— my own family, the Jews. It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.” She replied, “That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.” “Good answer!” he said. “Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.” And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone. “Good answer!” he said. “Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.” And when she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone.

Principles of Interpretation  Author’s Intent  Interpret in Context  What kind of writing is it? (Genre)  Use the Bible to Interpret Itself  Interpret difficult passages in light of clear ones

 How Desperate are we in Prayer?  God’s heart is for all people  Who is God asking you to go out of your way for?
