Using Mineral Resources
Book Definition In your own words… Picture Ore A mineral that is mined because it has useful metals and nonmetals.

 Matter – anything that takes up space and has mass.  Element – the simplest substance. Cannot be broken down. Examples: carbon, iron, gold, etc… 
Mineral Formation. Methods of Formation Crystals may form from magma cooling Cools slow = large crystals Cools quickly = small crystals Confined space.

By: Chase Nelson and Ross Admire. General info about Magnetite  Magnetite is an oxide of iron as is hemitite and can form as iron oxidizes in a dry environment.
Hematite  Fe2O3  Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada  found in volcanic rock and veins  forms near water to form "blueberries" like those found.
LITHOSPHERE.   Precious as well as base metals are mined in SA.  Precious metals : metals with a high monetary value; relatively rare e.g. gold, silver.

By Claire Scherler and Justin Benzoni Magnetite By Claire Scherler and Justin Benzoni

Where its Found and its Current Value Magnetite is found in the form of magnetite crystals in underground igneous rocks There are large amounts found in South America, Germany, Russia, New Zealand and California The current value is 200$ per ton

How it is Mined and Processed Since the mineral is too far underground surface mining is out of the question, therefore they must retrieve the magnetite through underground mining Traditional grinding and floatation methods from the EHM concentrator recovers copped and gold from there ore which then Magnetite is liberated by this process

The Element of the Mineral and What its Used for Magnetite is made up of oxide of iron It is used to make steel, paints, ink, magnets, paper and cosmetics

What is a Gemstone. Why Aren't all Minerals Gems What is a Gemstone? Why Aren't all Minerals Gems? What's Your Birthstone? A gemstone is a precious or semiprecious stone, esp. one cut, polished, and used in a piece of jewelry A mineral is inorganic (naturally occurring) where as a a gemstone are synthetic (not naturally occurring) Claire’s birthstone is Garnet and Justin’s birthstone is Amethyst
