STEAMPUNK???

What is Steampunk? Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam- powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century It’s modern technology – iPads, computers, robotics, air travel – powered by steam and set in the 1800’s.

Essential Questions… In what part of the figure will you integrate technology (head, back, chest, arm, etc)? How will you blend technology with the figure? Will you open the body to expose some of the parts inside? Will you have parts of the body morph into the technology? What technology and textural elements will you use? Gears, headphones, computer keyboards, remote controls, blenders, mixers, phones, light switches, light bulbs, electrical outlets, buckles, zippers, laces?

Further Advice… Consider what sort of content your work will have. The quality of your shading and drawing is important, but your idea is crucial! Make sure your starting photograph is a pose that will allow you to put emotion into it.

Begin Brainstorming Brainstorm a list of technological or textural items that could be used in the composition. Think about items that you have access to. Don’t always rely on photos from the internet. Draw a series of thumbnails of your ideas.

Your Photography You will need to take a picture of yourself for your figurative subject matter and pose. Remember, have your composition in mind before snapping the shots. Consider lighting: You will want deep contrasts to make the shading in your drawing dynamic. Perhaps shoot your shot with a friend in a dark area with directional lighting.
