Understand how to write a lab report Create and aim and a hypothesis Bronze Write a detailed method and equipment list Silver Form a conclusion and evaluation Gold

Complete a write up for the experiment you did on acids and alkalis 1.Aim 2.Hypothesis 3.Method 4.Equipment 5.Conclusion 6.Evaluation

Aim WHAT ARE YOU DOING THE EXPERIMENT FOR? Rubbish: An investigation on plants Okay: An investigation on the growth of plants Good: An investigation to show how temperature affects the growth of a tree Fab: An investigation to show how increasing temperature affects the growth of an apple tree.

Hypothesis WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN? Rubbish: The plant might grow Okay: The plant will grow taller and faster Good: The temperature will make the plant grow taller and faster Fab: Increasing temperature will make the plant grow taller and faster

Method WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? Rubbish: 1.Get a plant 2.Put it into a pot 3.Point a heater at it 4.Watch it grow

Method WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN? Okay: 1.Put your plant into a pot 2.Measure the plant 3.Point the heater at it 4.Watch it grow 5.Record results

Method WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN? Good: 1.Plant the tree into a pot 2.Measure the height 3.Place heater 10cm away from the plant 4.Record every 2 days how much the plant has grown at 20 degrees

Method WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN? Fab: 1.Plant the apple tree into a pot 2.Measure the height using a ruler 3.Place heater 10cm away from the plant and set at 20 degrees 4.Leave the heater on for 8 days 5.Record every 2 days how much the tree has grown using a ruler 6.Repeat the experiment twice for that temperature, then for the following temperatures: 40,50 degrees

Equipment WHAT WILL YOU USE? Rubbish: A plant Okay: A plant and some heaters Good: 1 x plant, 1 x heater Fab: 1 x apple tree, 1 x heater, 1 x ruler

Conclusion WHAT DO YOUR RESULTS SHOW? Rubbish: The plant grew Okay: As the temperature changed, the plant grew Good: Agreeing with my hypothesis – the plant grew taller and faster with increasing temperature Fab: As above…PLUS. At 20 degrees, the plant grew to 10 cm, at 50 degrees it grew to 50 cm…overall there was a positive correlation

Evaluation WHAT WERE THE WEAKNESSES IN YOUR EXPERIMENT Rubbish: My partner messed up my work, I left out a step in my method Okay: The plant growth could be affected by other factors Good: Other factors could affect the plant growing other than heat, such as the light intensity. We could improve by controlling the amount of light in the room using the lights. Fab: As above PLUS: This could affect my results as more light would also increase the plant growth. Controlling the lights will ensure that I am only investigating how temperature affects the growth

Remember: ColourAcid/alkalipHOrder (acid to alkali) Sodium Chloride (NaCl) GreenNeutral73 Hydrochloric acid (HCl) Dark redStrong acid11 AmmoniaBlueAlkali114 Ethanoic acidOrangeWeak acid42 Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) Dark purpleStrong alkali135 You do not need to remember the names/symbols – they will be given to you. You DO need to remember what colours they go, and whether they are strong acids/alkalis. You should be able to put them into order from acid to alkali and then guess which substance is which from there.
