Russia = U.S.S.R. = Soviet Union

 In 1917, Czar Nicholas II is overthrown and Russia becomes a communist nation.

 Ruled the Soviet Union during WWII  The government controlled everything– what to build, what to make in factories, what to grow on farms  Used secret police

 Government-owned and employed large numbers of workers  Food was distributed by the government  Often, people didn’t have enough to feed their families

 WEST:  NATO (U.S. and Western Europe)  Constitutional monarchies and democracies  FREE

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (1949)  United States  Belgium  Britain  Canada  Denmark  France  Iceland  Italy  Luxemburg  Netherlands  Norway  Portugal  1952: Greece & Turkey  1955: West Germany  1983: Spain

 EAST:  Warsaw Pact (U.S.S.R. and Eastern European countries)  Communist puppet governments  NOT FREE!!!
