Key Terms Enclosure Movement- where farmers combined scattered lands to form larger ones that were good for large-scale farming. Gentlemen Farmers- farmers who experimented with new farming methods, without the approval of other villagers. Crop Rotation- A basic principle of farming, where crops were alternated. Factors of Production- The basic resources necessary for industrialization- land, capital, and labor. “Land”- economists are referring to all natural resources. “Capital”- referred to money and goods such as tools, machinery, equipment, and inventory.

Famous People Jethro Tull- Gentlemen Farmer, Invented the seed drill (helped plant seeds in regular rows) and the horse-drawn cultivator Charles ‘Turnip’ Townshend- English Gentlemen Farmer, created the crop rotation (crops are alternated to preserve soil fertility) which has been a basic principle of modern farming Robert Ransome- American Blacksmith, invented the iron plow in three parts

Advancements Iron Plow Before it was made of wood, now it came with a tougher material and 3 removable parts that made it more reliable and easier to replace Crop Rotation It saved the harvest and created a greater influx of food, preserve the nutrients in soil and kept the soil fresh Seed Drill The seed drill placed the seed directly in the ground – didn’t waste any of the seeds, faster planting by using the drill

What inventions/techniques do we still use today? How are they the same? How have they changed? What do we still use today? We still use crop rotation, the iron plow, and the seed drill How are they the same? Crop rotation is a basic principle of farming, and the iron plow and seed drill How have they changed? The iron plow and seed drill had to be worked by hand or with animals, now we have engines in the machines and we control them

Why is your topic the most important factor in the advancement of the Industrial Revolution? Advancements in Agriculture started off the Industrial Revolution. Instead of using man labor they started using animals to work machines – got rid of farming labor Increase in crops – surplus of food and trade Gave people more jobs People in need of a job
