Extending DNS to support location aware ITS services G. Karagiannis (with input from Tiago Fioreze and Geert Heijenk)

Location based ITS services: Geocast Location based ITS Internet based services supports positioning by using geographical coordinates –Example: geocasting used to deliver IP packets to a set of elements (e.g., vehicles) lying within a designated geographical area Requirement: IP addresses of entities must be associated with geographical coordinates: –temporary (vehicles) –permanent (Road Side Units (RSU))

Problem and Possible IETF work Problem: DNS LOC records RFC1876 can be used to record geographical information and IP address for an RSU, but forwarding DNS lookups can only be done by using the Internet RSU hostname to find IP address Possible IETF work: extend DNS to use LOC records, but perform forwarding DNS lookups using geographical coordinates of a road to find an IP address
