“Becoming Friends” Making “Faux” Stained Glass Windows Shanti Foundation for Peace Ms. Star* Padilla, Artist Washington School’s 3rd Grade Spring 2009 Making “Faux” Stained Glass Windows Shanti Foundation for Peace Ms. Star* Padilla, Artist Washington School’s 3rd Grade Spring 2009

We read from “Native American Animal Stories” and shared ideas about friendship, taking risks and overcoming differences. Each class became an element (earth, fire, air and water). We drew by ourselves and as groups to illustrate the stories we wrote. 2 fire element friends Water dragon saving the tiny ant

We used our drawings well

Learning Collage! / We drew an animal or creature related to our classroom element on paper. / Using a piece of plastic, permanent marker and painter’s tape, we traced our image. / We had a large variety of specialty papers and colorful cellophanes to choose from. / With scissors, gluesticks, pencils and markers, we started the puzzle-like style of collage.

Collage takes time and patience We had tissue papers, fancy handmade and art papers, cellophane and metallic films and brown printed papers. Working together with our groups, we made our vision complete

Working together we approached our goals. It was important that everyone in the group shared ideas and contributed to the artmaking. Time for the windows to shine!

Our stained glass windows…

Thank you 3rd graders!

Special thanks to the teachers for welcoming me into your classrooms
