Combining Similar Terms using Algebra Tiles
Each pair of students needs a package of algebra tiles. Have resource managers get these. Rules for working with tiles: Clear off your desks and put tiles on a piece of paper. Pick up any tiles that drop on floor! DO not break any tiles apart! The 5-unit tiles are supposed to be attached. Return them to the plastic bag after working with them.
Naming the tiles
2-3 Jumbled Piles (p. 41) Your teacher will show you a jumbled pile of algebra tiles and will challenge you to name all of them. What is the best description for the collection of tiles? Is your description the best possible?
Do problem 2-4 (p. 42) with your team: Build each collection of tiles represented below. Then name the collection using a simpler algebraic expression, if possible. If it is not possible to simplify the expression, explain why not.
