The Ferl Practitioners’ Programme Transforming Teaching and Learning with ILT D4.4 How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

How to Use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom (Optional Activity) D4.4 How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Teaching styles There is a spectrum of teaching styles just as there is a spectrum of learning styles. There is no ‘right’ teaching style – excellent teachers exist all along the spectrum. ILT does not constrain you to one delivery style. The following slides show a variety of styles you can use, whether you are working with one laptop and a data projector or with a roomful of computers. D4.4 How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Layout 1: 3 computers in room Scenario 1 Groups working on a collaborative task. One from each group comes out to either (a) find more information for their group, (b) process their group’s data or (c) contribute to an on-going presentation. Scenario 2 Groups working on a collaborative task. In turn, each whole group works together on computers to either (a) find more information, (b) process data or (c) create a presentation. Scenario 3 Groups working on a collaborative task Each group works on a teacher-directed task while one specific group works on computers to either (a) find more information, (b) process data or (c) create a presentation. Scenario 1 Practitioner links computer to data projector to explain concepts to a class via a presentation. Learners take notes from screen and practitioner. Teacher desk Exploratory Directive Teaching styles D4.4 Teaching styles Layout 2: 1 computer or laptop in a room How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Scenario 2 Practitioner links computer to data projector and asks a learner to explain concepts to the class via a presentation. Class take notes from screen and peer ‘explainer’. Teacher desk Exploratory Directive Teaching styles D4.4 Teaching styles Layout 2: 1 computer or latptop in a room How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Scenario 3 Practitioner links a computer to data projector and loads up interactive spreadsheet. Learners work in groups and suggest scenarios to explore. Each group in turn comes up, presents scenario and tries to anticipate, then explain, the results. Teacher desk Exploratory Directive Teaching styles D4.4 Teaching styles Layout 2: 1 computer or laptop in a room How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Scenario 4 Practitioner links a computer to data projector and uses an interactive Word document containing list of concepts relevant to the course. Practitioner questions different learners to work out a mind map relating the concepts together. Scenario 5 Practitioner links a computer to a data projector with stimulus material (that is, photo, text, graph) from the course. In groups, learners draw out key ideas from the stimulus material. Either a) each group presents their interpretation to the class or b) the results of a teacher-led discussion are captured on computer and displayed. The results may also be saved and printed. Scenario 1 Learners have tasks which they have to work through in sequence on their own. Different learners move at different speeds. Practitioner circulates to keep learners on task and provide individual attention. Teacher desk ExploratoryDirective Teaching styles D4.4 Teaching styles Layout 3: Room full of computers How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Scenario 2 Learners have open-ended tasks which involve alternative routes. Different learners work on the tasks at different speeds. Practitioner circulates to keep them on task and provide individual attention. Teacher desk Exploratory Directive Teaching styles D4.4 Teaching styles Layout 3: Room full of computers How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom

Scenario 3 Learners work in pairs to create something unique based on their joint research and note taking. Each pair eventually presents their finished product to the class via a data projector. Marks are allocated to each presentation according to given criteria. Practitioner circulates to keep learners on task and and provide individual attention. ILT does not limit you to one delivery style You can use different teaching styles to alter the level of exploratory-v-directive activity Another example of it’s not what you’ve got, it’s what you do with it! D4.4 Teaching styles How to use Delivery Technologies in the Classroom
