Utilizing Lecture Capture as an Educational/Flipped Tool

Session Objectives 1.Utilize lecture capture as an educational/flipped classroom tool. 2.Create a learner-centered environment that promotes active learning.

Lecture Capture o The process of digitally capturing the audio and visual content of a lecture. Tegrity o Tegrity Campus is a fully automated lecture capture solution in traditional, hybrid, and online courses to record lectures as well as supplementary course content. – Tegrity

Educational Methods Lessons and activities should relate to the material in the lecture to reinforce and build upon that information. Assessment drives education.

Methods Utilizing Lecture Capture Used when students watch the lecture before coming to class: o Clicker quiz o Include questions at the end of the recording that students must answer before the next class meeting Can be submitted in class Group or individual work Can have students post answers to D2L as a file upload or as part of a discussion forum Students can present information at next class meeting

Methods Utilizing Lecture Capture Continued… o Apply lecture material to a case study, problem set, or any other real world application – not just passively watching a lecture Include future learning objectives o Assign student(s) the responsibility of summarizing and/or highlighting the important points of the lecture Student groups can take case studies presented in the lecture and do additional research follow-up. o Have students post the most confusing or difficult part of the lecture Faculty and students can help clarify these points.

Methods Utilizing Lecture Capture Continued… Have students create group and/or individual presentations using the screen capture system that can be uploaded to D2L. o These videos can then be viewed by the professor with the best videos being posted for the students to view. Students can then be held responsible for the content in the presentations.
