Wellness Policies Creating healthier school environments

Background

What must the policy include? o Goals for nutrition education, physical activity, nutrition promotion, and other school-based activities to promote student wellness. o Nutrition Guidelines for all foods available on campus. o Plan for measuring implementation. o Designation of one or more SFA officials to monitor compliance

SFA Implementation Responsibilities  Required to permit teachers, parents, students, student nutrition staff, etc. to participate in the development of the LWP.  Required to inform and update the public about the content and implementation of the LWP.  Required to measure periodically, and make available to the public an assessment of the LWP, including:  Include schools that are in compliance  Comparison of the LWP to model wellness policies  Progress made in attaining LWP goals. All of this information is contained in SP , and was distributed to SFA’s last year through an NSLP Bulletin

SA Review of LWP  SA’s are NOT responsible for evaluating the quality of the SFA’s LWP goals or policies.  SA’s ARE responsible for the following:  Ensuring that LWP contain the required elements (listed on slide 3).  SFA has taken the required steps regarding implementation, transparency, public input and availability. * SA will begin reviewing LWP during the Admin. Review beginning in SY13-14*

Supporting LWP Documentation  Copy of the Local Wellness Policy (LWP)  Documentation that the policy has been made available to the public  Documentation of SFA’s efforts to review & update the local policy  Copy of SFA’s most recent assessment on the implementation of the policy

Review Findings  If deficiencies are identified during an Admin Review:  SFA will be noncompliant with the LWP evaluation.  SA must address through CA  SA will provide TA if necessary Repeated violations that are not corrected could result in withholding of program payments
