What is a Statistical Question? Illustrative Mathematices 6.SP.1 A question that can be answered by collecting data and where there will be variability (at least 5 different answers)

Deandre likes to collect buttons and he keeps them in a jar. Sometimes Deandre likes to take the buttons out of the jar and sort them. Which questions are Statistical Questions?

What is a typical number of holes for the buttons in the jar? How many buttons are in the jar? How large is the largest button in the jar? If he grabbed a handful of buttons, what are the chances that all of the buttons in his hand are round? What is a typical size for the buttons in the jar? How are these buttons distributed according to color?

More Examples and Non-Examples How many days are in March? How old is your dog? How old are the dogs on this street? What percent of people like watermelons? Do you like watermelons? What was the highest temperature today?
