Feed back from last course: Statistics What activities have you tried from last time What modifications did you make? How did it go?

People Graphs Question with numerical answer,

Average feet What is the average foot length in your class? Working in groups of 4-8 Draw around your foot ( with shoe on!) Cut out the outline Measure the length of your foot and write it on the cutout How would you find the average foot length of your group using the cutouts How would you find the average foot length of your class using the cutouts

Mean of Means Jack competed in long jump at the school sports. On the first round his jumps were 4.49, 4.55, 4.48, and 4.56, with a mean of 4.52 On the second round his jumps were 4.59, 4.60, 4.62, 4.59 and 4.61 with a mean of He claims he can find the mean of all his jumps by taking the mean of his means. Is he right? Explain your answer.

What’s in an average? What is the most useful average ( mean, median or mode) to describe a typical item in each of the following? Size of shoes sold in a shoe store Cost of houses in your town Salaries in a large company A household’s monthly power bill over a year

You be the judge In a gym competition Aroha and Beth were the best 2 competitors. The five judges gave them the following scores. Who won the competition? Explain your answer JudgeArohaBeth

Statistics Puzzles Use the cards to answer the questions

Statistics poser? Two boxes P and Q, each contain 3 jewels When a jewel worth $5 000 is removed from P to Q the mean value of the jewels in each box increases by $ What is the total value of all 6 jewels??

Feed back from last course: Probability What activities have you tried from last time What modifications did you make? How did it go?

Queue problem You have to decide which queue to join. Throw 2 die and add their values. If you have a counter in the queue of that value you can move it across the line. If your partner has a counter in the queue of that value they can move it across their line. Where will you put your counters??

Odds or Sixes Tania and Derek are playing a game with one die. They throw the die. If the number on the die is odd, Tania wins that round. If the number on the die is a six, Derek wins. (It doesn't matter who throws the die.) Who is more likely to win the game? Why? How could you make the game fair?

Two’s Company A container holds 4 yellow balls, 2 blue balls and 1 red ball. The balls are identical in all ways except colour. Shake the container, and look at how the balls settle. You win if two blue balls touch. Did you win? Complete several shakes and look at your results.
