THE ROAD TO WW2 Appeasement means to pacify, soothe or satisfy. To give someone what they want.

Fascism in Italy In October 1935 Mussolini invaded Ethiopia so he could control the mouth of the Red Sea In October 1935 Mussolini invaded Ethiopia so he could control the mouth of the Red Sea The League of Nations did nothing. Hitler takes note The League of Nations did nothing. Hitler takes note

Violation and Appeasement

Answer the following question First, Hitler sent troops to the Rhine First, Hitler sent troops to the Rhine Second, Hitler invaded Austria Second, Hitler invaded Austria Now, Hitler is claiming that he wants to liberate the Germans living in Czechoslovakia. He will take control of the country, and then NEVER make another demand. If you are the British Prime minister, do you declare war, or let him have this last conquest?

The Munich Conference Prime Minister Édouard Daladier Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain Dictator Benito Mussolini Dictator Adolf Hitler

The Munich Agreement 1938 A 1938 meeting between Great Britain and Germany A 1938 meeting between Great Britain and Germany British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain allows Hitler to take the Sudetenland; Hitler promises that he wouldn’t try to take over any new territories (Yeah Right!) Czechoslovakia and Soviets not invited to the meeting!! Czechoslovakia and Soviets not invited to the meeting!! Great Britain Appeased Hitler with this agreement Great Britain Appeased Hitler with this agreement Stalin would have gone to war to protect Czechoslovakia Stalin would have gone to war to protect Czechoslovakia

The Munich Agreement Britain and France let Germany take control of Czechoslovakia In exchange for western Czechoslovakia, Hitler promised to not invade or annex any other countries. The settlement of the Czechoslovakian problem, which has now been achieved is, in my view, only the prelude to a larger settlement in which all Europe may find peace. This morning I had another talk with the German Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Some of you, perhaps, have already heard what it contains but I would just like to read it to you: '... We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again.' My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honor. I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds.

The Invasion of Czechoslovakia

March 1939 Hitler invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia (he promised he wouldn’t) March 1939 Hitler invaded the rest of Czechoslovakia (he promised he wouldn’t) Next Hitler demanded parts of Poland Next Hitler demanded parts of Poland Great Britain warns Hitler if he invades Poland they will declare war on Germany Great Britain warns Hitler if he invades Poland they will declare war on Germany

Germany’s Invasion of France

Britain Stands Alone!

The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Let us therefore be prepared to do our duty so that, if the British Empire lasts for a thousand years, men will say, ‘This was their finest hour’. (18th June 1940) We shall fight them on the beaches, we shall fight them on the landing grounds, we shall fight them in the field and in the street, we shall fight them in the hills. We shall never surrender. Sir Winston Churchill
