Outreach Making Training a Successful Experience Successful Experience

Profile of Participants n Two-thirds of all family care services are provided by family members. n 80% of all family caregivers are women n 79% are between the ages of n 20-40% of caregivers are also raising children under 18

Goals of Weekly Training n Social Support: A place to meet co-workers and develop a “network” n Ongoing Training: Making them better workers and helping to open and develop new career paths

Some Suggestions n Create a relaxed and supportive learning environment n Give the participants a chance to get to know you and know each other n Encourage everyone to participate n Be a good listener and provide constructive feedback

Basic Things to Include n Refreshments: Feed them and they will come n Opening activity or game: Helps everyone interact and get to know each other n Speaker or Video: Be sure to leave time for questions n Highlight Person: Good get to know you activity and makes them feel special and welcome n Door Prize Drawing: Gets them to stay for the entire meeting and do evaluations n Staff on Hand to Answer Questions

Sign-In Table n Have everyone sign in with their name and phone number n Make their own name tag n Pick up handouts and resource information

Room Setup n A casual arrangement of chairs will help them interact with each other n Leave room for wheelchair access

Resources for Meetings n Videos you can borrow: Other home care organizations, Agency on Aging, Local Library n Speakers from within the County: Mental Health, IHSS, Sheriff Department, EOC, APS n Other Speakers: Hospitals, Medical Supply Companies, Red Cross, Hospice, California Telephone Access Program, Support Groups, Agency on Aging, Adult Schools

Marketing n Phone Calls: Use a sign-in sheet n Word of Mouth: Use your reception and registry staff n Flyers: Posters and handouts at your office, IHSS, other health care agencies, local library, County Agency on Aging n Mailers: Only expect a 1% return
