I had one older sister, Susan I also had two younger sisters, Mary Eastey and Sarah Cloyce As well as 4 brothers, John, Edmund, Jacob, and Joseph. Our Family settled in Salem village in 1640.
I was married to Francis Nurse around He was born around 1619 and was a tray maker by trade. In 1672 Francis served as Salem's constable. Their were eight children. (4 girls + 4 Boys) Our family had lots of respect in the village. We did how ever have problems with the Putnam's because of land disputes.
I was mostly house wife and took care of the children. Community midwife.
I was known to be a healer and did employ herbs to do this work.
I was a religious woman in my seventies and when I was accused of witchcraft, it makes the Reverend Hale pause and reconsider whether the proceedings are just and fair. “The lord knows that I haven't hurt them” The community had called me "a good model of Christian behavior”.
My family had a lot of land disputes with the Putnam family. I was accused by Edward & John Putnam. My trial began on June 30th 1692 At the time of the trial Rebecca was 71 years old. There is a testimony against Rebecca in the trials, claiming that she had murdered babies. On June 30, the jury came back with a verdict of "Not Guilty. I was asked to explain my words "she is one of us," But I did not hear the question. The jury took my silence as an indication of guilt. The jury deliberated a second time and came back with a verdict of guilty. I was sentenced to death on June 30. I was executed on July 19. (Hung)
