My Family History By: Ruby Schwartz 1

HISTORIAN My Family ancestry is… Russian Polish Italian Irish Hungarian Czechoslovakian 2

HISTORIAN My dad’s family came from Russia, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. My mom’s family came from Ireland, and Italy. We know for sure that at least my great grandmother (Sylvia) came through Ellis Island. All the other eventually came through New York, settling in Pennsylvania. 3

HISTORIAN continued (Slide 2) They immigrated from those places in the 1920s. 19 4

HISTORIAN continued (Slide 2) When they immigrated… They WANTED to end up in New York! But… they ended up in Pennsylvania. Maybe they made a wrong turn. 5

HISTORIAN My parents families moved away from where they were born. Why you ask? Well, war was bothering them for starters. Also, because they want a better life. They had REALLY hardworking lifestyles. 6

HISTORIAN continued (Slide 6) Like I said… There was a war going on when they left. Obviously, they did not enjoy there life. Sometimes… They were in DANGER! Because… the war could have been going on where they were living! 7

HISTORIAN My family started their NEW life in Pittsburgh PA. My great grandmother on my dad’s side, worked in a bakery. Her husband drove a delivery truck for a bakery. When they moved, they had very little money. How could they get money? It doesn't just grow on trees! 8

HISTORIAN My other great grandparents worked also. One of my great grandfathers worked in a deli, and one worked in a produce house. My other great grandmother worked selling clothes at a fancy ladies store in downtown Pittsburgh. 9

ECONOMIST My great grandmother worked 2 jobs to take care of her children & to make ends meet. None of my great grandparents had formal education. They worked for almost ANYBODY to take care of there family. 10

ECONOMIST Like I said… a bakery hired my great grandmother. I don’t know what the specific name was but I think it was called Wilmer's Bakery. She worked VERY hard to pay for food and clothes for their family. 11

GEOGRAPHER The weather in Russia was mostly VERY cold. The terrain was mountainous. The rest of the family came from around Europe. They arrived in the USA by boat. Like I said they started to settle in New York. But then my great grandmother said, “Hey! Let’s move to Pittsburgh!” So they packed up there stuff and moved to Pittsburgh. They most likely traveled by train. 12

POLITICAL SCIENTIST My family did not come to the USA because of deportation. They did not have criminal backgrounds. They believed in freedom and better opportunities. They were hard workers, and happy to be in the USA. 13
