Presentation to the International Ice Charting Working Group 22 November 2007 Ice In Electronic Navigation Charts (ENCs) (A Status Report)

Ice In ECDIS Overview  Vision  Terminology  History  IHO Registry  Next Steps  ICAN Pilot Project

Terminology  ENC – Electronic Navigation Chart  ECS – Electronic Chart System  ECDIS – Electronic Chart Display and Information System –Approved system legally permitted to replace paper charts  S-57 – IHO standard for exchange of ECDIS data  S-52 –IHO standard for presentation of ECDIS information  S-100 – a new family of IHO standards that will replace S- 57, S-52 and others – in several years  MIO – Marine Information Objects –Ice, Weather, currents, dynamic water depths, etc  AML – Additional Military Layer –SML – Supplementary Marine Layer

Ice In ENCs Vision  In the far northern and southern hemispheres, ice is significant hazard to navigation, in addition to the hazards found in temperate seas; the integration of real time or near real-time ice information into ENCs is an important and natural step towards safer polar navigation.  To achieve this vision one primary requirement is the development of an ICE feature data dictionary to work with ENCs.

Ice In ENCs - History  1992 – Workshop: S57 Object Catalogue - Ottawa  1995 Workshop: Standards for Ice Information in ECDIS - Ottawa Draft Ice Object Catalogue, Version 1.0Draft Ice Object Catalogue, Version 1.0  1996 Workshop: ECDIS in Ice Navigation – Hamburg Ice Object Catalogue, Version 2.0Ice Object Catalogue, Version 2.0  1999 The ECDIS Ice Chart Project, SevenCs AG & Co.  2000 Ice In ECDIS Workshop – St. John’s, NFLD Ice Object Catalogue, Version 3.0Ice Object Catalogue, Version 3.0  2002 Integration of Sea Ice into ECDIS, UNB Project  2005 IHO Ice Registry (Draft)  2005 IICWG Interoperability Data Formats workshop trial implementation of Ice Objects cataloguetrial implementation of Ice Objects catalogue catalogue revised to be consistent with other standardscatalogue revised to be consistent with other standards  2007 JCOMM Expert Team on Sea Ice (ETSI) Ice Object Catalogue Version 4.0Ice Object Catalogue Version 4.0 ETSI accepts ownership of Ice Registry – approves Registry management processETSI accepts ownership of Ice Registry – approves Registry management process  2007 HGMIO approves ETSI as owner of Ice Registry and appoints Falkingham as registry manager –IHO Register of Marine Information Objects goes on-line After many years of effort an ICE Feature Data Dictionary is now available as a register compatible with IHO and others

 Marine Information Objects –Layers on top of hydrographic charts that can be turned on and off –Objects do not have to conform to rigid hydrographic chart standards –Objects managed in an IHO Registry of Registers  Hydro, Ice, IENC, NPUB,etc IHO Registry of Hydrographic Related Features

Registry Management  Registry Owner: IHO –Primary responsibility for the management, dissemination and intellectual content of the registry  Registry User: Register Owners –Register owners / managers making changes to their Register in the Registry  Registry Manager: UKHO – Barrie Greenslade –Responsible for the administration of the registry content. Follows ISO A Registry is the system that supports the Register

ICE Register Management  Register Owner: JCOMM ETSI –Primary responsibility for the management and intellectual content of the register  Register User: ECS Developers / Suppliers –Any person or organization interested in accessing or influencing the content of the register  Register Manager: ETSI Secretariat – Alice Soares –Responsible for the administration of the register content  Control Body: ETSI ENC Ice Objects Task Group –Responsible to review and recommend proposals for changes to the Register

Next Steps  Falkingham to populate the IHO ICE Register with Ice Objects from the Catalogue Version 4.0 –Turn maintenance of the register over to the ETSI Secretariat (training)  Prepare proposals to harmonize a few outstanding conflicts in standards –WMO Sea Ice Nomenclature & Symbology, SIGRID 3, Ice Objects  Trials with ENC suppliers to evaluate ICE Register in real systems –ICAN, TRANSAS, C-MAP, Seven Cs, etc –Develop presentation guidelines / standards
