LIFE IN SWEDEN I was a model before I started being cast in advertisements. I eventually became an actress. I was not an indentured servant.
FAMILY I had an older brother and an older sister. My father died of Spanish Flu when I was 14. My sister died not long after.
IMMIGRATION I was born September 18, 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden. I set sail for America on June 30, I didn’t become a naturalized citizen of the United States until February 9, I came to America because I signed a contract with MGM, a large acting company.
CAREER I came to America because I signed a contract with MGM. I was in over 20 movies while in the U.S. I was very successful and was in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the most beautiful woman to ever live. I received many awards, including an Academy Award for Best actress.
MOVIES Some of my more famous movies were A Woman of Affairs, Anna Christie, Grand Hotel, and The Mysterious Lady. I starred in several silent films along with speaking films.
RELATIONSHIPS I never married and never had kids. I left a man at the altar when I got cold feet about marrying him.
LIFE I never made it clear what religion I practice, but I was raised Lutheran. I lived in L.A. for several years, but I eventually moved to New York City where I stayed the rest of my life.
DEATH The last years of my life I lived in seclusion. I died April 15, 1990 at the age of 84 from pneumonia. I was cremated and my ashes were put in my hometown in Sweden.
