Progressivism- movement by Americans to make government more responsive to what people want (not businesses) and correct problems in American society (work conditions, poverty, equality) Objective – 1) Identify the 4 goals of Progressivism – 2) Explain the change in the role of Government demanded by progressives. (What do Progressives want from the Government? What do they want fixed?)

4 Goals Protect Social Welfare- “Social Gospel” said people should try to help the less fortunate *Fix poverty *Fix problems with industrialization (Low pay, dangerous conditions, child labor) What are some laws today designed to keep workers paid well and safe?

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire (664)- lethal fire in an garment sweatshop, 146 women died (burned, jumped f. 8/9 th story windows) No fire escapes or access to stairs, doors locked from outside to keep women at their work Convinced people that Gov. had to make laws that forced business to have safety standards for workers

Promote Moral Reform- improve people’s lives by changing negative lifestyles (alcoholism) *Prohibition- movement to criminalize (make illegal) alcohol Why do you think women would support the prohibition movement?

Create economic reform *End Laissez-Faire- idea that Gov. should not regulate or interfere with business *Supported Socialism- idea that everything in society should be shared equally (pay, power, etc.), Gov should control more businesses and resources *Muckrakers- journalists who exposed corrupt businesses and political machines What company does the Octopus represent? What is it grabbing with it’s tentacles? What is the cartoon saying about the power of business in America at this time? How does exposing corruption to the public influence the Government to act?

The Jungle- Upton Sinclair exposed filthy all meat slaughterhouse conditions were

Efficiency- make work tasks easier and simpler *Increased the amount of goods produced, which lower the price for consumers Example- assembly line at Ford (each worker had one task when assembling a car while the cars moved at a steady pace) What is the problem in simplifying tasks to the point anyone can do the job?
