STAY HEALTHY, KEEP FIT This presentation has been based on the work scheme provided by the national curriculum. 2

A BALANCED DIET Part of staying Healthy means having a balanced diet. If you eat too much of something or not enough of something else then you could get ill. 3

CAUSES OF ADDICTION Some things that are bad for you can be addictive. Smoking causes blocked arteries, lung cancer and breathing problems. Tobacco contains nicotine which makes you addicted to smoking. Sniffing glue and paint is dangerous. It damages the brain and is also addictive. In small amounts drinking alcohol is not as harmful as smoking but it slows down your reactions and can damage your liver if drunk excessively. 4

TALKING ABOUT GERMS You may have heard of this word, MICRO – ORGANISM Don’t worry, it may seem complicated but it’s simple, An Organism is a living thing. And Micro mean mini or small. MINI – LIVING THING! Micro – organisms can only be seen through a telescope There are millions of micro – organisms in the air, soil, water and even the human body Some micro – organisms are useful but some are dangerous Bacteria and viruses are micro – organisms 5

HELPFUL MICRO - ORGANISMS These Micro – Organisms are useful to us. Bacteria can help make cheese and yoghurt. Bacteria also rots down dead organisms and puts nutrients in the soil to help plants grow. Yeast is a micro – organism that is used in bread and beer. 6

BAD MICRO - ORGANISMS Some Micro – Organisms are bad. They Cause Disease and illness. They cause tooth decay. They can cause food to go mouldy. From insect bites. From coughs or sneezes. From mouldy food. By touching infected people. 7

KEEPING FIT Another part of staying healthy is keeping fit. You exercise to burn off energy from the food you eat. Ways of exercising. Football You must try and do at least 45 minutes 3 times a week, that’s 135 minutes a week!. Not a lot is it? EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE: 1)It strengthens the muscles including the heart. 2)It develops the lungs. 3)It helps body coordination. 4)It uses up food for energy to prevent getting fat. 8
