Andy Penaluna A personal global perspective on Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Context - 30 country survey plus personal interactions “...considerable consensus that entrepreneurship can be taught and that teaching methods can be enhanced through active participation …clear indication of considerable growth in entrepreneurship courses and programs, although there is very little consistency in approach” (See: Penaluna, Jones and Penaluna, 2012)

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Subject areas ranged from art and design, to psychology, veterinary studies, and engineering…majority (57 per cent) were based within business school environments Only 22 per cent teach across disciplines 76 per cent were lecturers with first-hand experience of starting an enterprise – research versus practice dilemmas etc. (See: Penaluna, Jones and Penaluna, 2012)

Contributions to the enterprise education policy agenda include: Global thoughts on Enterprise Education

UK QAA Guidance discussions: United Nations (Geneva), European Commission (Dublin and Slovenia / 24 member states plus pre accession countries etc.), ICSB / SEAANZ Summit (Wellington / included China, USA & S Korea), American University in Cairo (Egypt and Middle East) ADEPTT (Europe), IEEC (Nigeria / Africa), Macedonia – enterprise educators network.

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Personal thoughts and comparisons Growing recognition in business environments of the key role played by innovation in the creation and success of businesses Start up is a poor metric longitudinally - but still suits many government agendas

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Personal thoughts and comparisons Embedding is no longer just an argument, it is a goal in most countries. Business School agendas are changing - but slowly. (See also UK Association of Business Schools) It’s much bigger than HE, colleges and schools are fast engaging (SEECEL / ETF / ADEPPT / Macedonia)

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Personal thoughts and comparisons Educating the educators has become a key factor Context is key, all offerings cannot be the same. (E.g. UAE versus Australia discussions) Intellectual Property education - needs greater awareness and educator development (Note: NUS, IPAN, UKIPO, 2012)

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Personal thoughts and comparisons Assessment remains an issue in terms of constructive alignment – especially when it comes to innovation and creativity Clear need for more sustainable innovation - combining economic, ecologic and social aspects

Global thoughts on Enterprise Education Global Aspiration “Now more than ever we need innovation, new solutions, creative approaches and new ways of operating. We are in unchartered territory and need people in all sectors and at all ages who can “think out of the box” to identify and pursue opportunities in new and paradigm thinking ways” (World Economic Forum, 2009, 12).
