The Emerging Broadband Environment and Implications for the User Experience Presentation for Carnegie Mellon University Libraries October 12, 2005 Tony DiMaso Verizon Corporate Strategy & Development

“Compelling User Experience” A Compelling User Experience Is the key to building a loyal user community and is a critical element for Sustainable Advantage In a world of intensifying competition and rapid change and innovation

Major Paradigms Anytime/ Anywhere connectivity Unified Experience– network and device Personalized Lifestyle-enabling Convergence Mobile Paradigm Internet Paradigm  Seamless Mobility  Unified Control  Unified Management  Content Portability  Cross-platform licensing  Cross-platform pricing  Remote services activation  Time and place shifting  Regulatory paradigm shifts  Unified QOS and security  Device proliferation Broadband Paradigm Bandwidth to the user Interactive & Visual Content-enabling Global Scope Control at the Edge Services as Applications Access vs.Transport

“The Virtuous/ Vicious Cycle” This interaction is accelerating and intensifying with expanding content, new technology platforms, and escalating user expectations User Expectations Access anytime/ anywhere Easy to use and manage Secure and supported Content Entertainment & information Traditional & emerging media Personalized & interactive Technology More versatile devices More powerful networks Efficient navigation tools

The Content Environment TV Programming Movies and Music Sports and Gaming News & Advertising Archived Libraries User-Created Media Info Access and Mgmt: - Commercial and Government - Education and Healthcare -Etc…. 6 User Needs and Wants… PC Laptop Game Console Stereo PDA TV DVD Camera Settop Box

Advanced Devices Multiple functions Performance and price Personalized Advanced Networks Terrestrial/ Mobile Optical/ wireless High-bandwidth Content Digitization Technology Enablers

Convergence Convergence… provides a unified user experience with services and applications available across multiple access technologies and devices in support of an increasingly mobile communications environment Device Convergence Combining multiple access-based services to create a unified user experience with a single service offering (e.g., mobile/broadband roaming, unified messaging or location services) Combining multiple functions into a single device that accesses multiple services across multiple access technologies (e.g., multi-purpose cell phones, organizers or storage devices) Combining separate networks (voice, data, video, etc.) and support systems to create a unified networking infrastructure Unified Core (Control and Service) Multi- access Service Providers PSTN Operations Support Systems Service Convergence Network Convergence Source: inCode, VZ SD&P

Device Convergence Multi-Functional Capability New devices incorporate the functionality of multiple, single- purpose devices Users often accept design and functionality tradeoffs in exchange for reduced device clutter Multi-Radio Capability Dual-mode handsets, multi-radio PDAs, etc. Dual-mode handsets allow users to make cellular calls as usual, plus calls over the fixed line using VoIP or PSTN when close to home/office/hotspots Bluetooth UMA handsets are shipping now; Wifi UMA and Wifi SIP begin shipping later in 2005 More than 15 Wifi enabled handsets are expected to be commercially available by mid (Source: FMCA) Device Convergence is accelerating on multiple fronts

UpstreamDownstream Mbps FiOS – “redefining interaction” Platform for terrestrial content and applications Applications and Media Bandwidth File Sharing, Home Video Sharing/Streaming Multi-Player Gaming, Interactive Distance Learning Large File Sharing HDTV Video-on-Demand Network Hosted Applications and Storage Video Conferencing, Premises Surveillance Telemedicine SDTV Video-on-Demand, Telecommuting Premises Web Hosting Next Generation 3D TV Web Surfing Real-Time SDTV, Network PVR FTTP Cable Modem ADSL Dial-Up

Business Model Transformation From : Connectivity provider Features and functions Separate networks Communications “All invented here” Quality of service To : Solutions provider Integrated and managed services Converged networks Connected applications “All delivered here” (SPOA) Compelling user experience Enabling the Compelling User Experience

Telecom Transition To…From… Mobile and Converged Broadband Multi-media Packetized Optical Infrastructure Open architecture Market-based regulation Wireline Narrowband Voice-centric Circuit-switched Copper infrastructure Proprietary architecture Traditional Regulation

Things to think about The future of libraries –Library as portal or portals as libraries? –What is the “business model”? Creating a compelling user experience –Physical and virtual –Terrestrial and mobile Key elements –The content (proprietary, focused, etc) –The experience – technology integration

Thoughts on the Future Really compelling – raising the bar Re-defining connectivity and interaction Intelligent Networks and Ecosystems Levels of value- secure, transactional “Its not about searching, its about finding” Convergence and true mobility Multiple access technologies The (virtuous/ vicious) world of virtually unlimited options
