Why Change? For the students of course!students

College and Career Ready Students Establish independence Acquire a strong content knowledge base Adapt communication to audience, task, purpose or discipline Comprehend, critique and question Cite and evaluate evidence Use technology and digital media thoughtfully Understand other perspectives and cultures National Governors Association/Chief State School Officers (2010)

What is Not Covered by the Standards? Common Core Require a Shift from…. to School level leaders will need to play a central role in implementing the new standards and in cultivating this mindset shift. 6 High School Completion College and Career Readiness for All

Average is Over "There will always be change — new jobs, new products, new services. But the one thing we know for sure is that with each advance in globalization and the I.T. revolution, the best jobs will require workers to have more and better education to make themselves above average." Thomas L. Friedman New York Times, January 24, 2012

Technological Changes Do you remember when? Applications were sent to colleges. Linked-In was a jail. Skype was a typo. Twitter was a sound. 4G was a parking spot. Tom Friedman. Meet the Press. September 4, 2011.

Benefits of Common Core State Standards 9 Previously, every state had its own set of academic standards and different expectations of student performance. Consistency Common standards can help create more equal access to an excellent education. Equity All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers, but also with students from around the world. Competition Clear and coherent standards will help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them. Clarity Common Standards create a foundation for districts and states to work collaboratively. Collaboration 9

College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards (32 Anchor Standards) Overarching standards for each of four strands that are further defined by grade-specific standard. Reading – 10 standards Writing – 10 standards Speaking and Listening – 6 standards Language – 6 standards

Nine Specific Advances in the PARCC ELA/Literacy Assessment Demanded by the Three Core Shifts

1.Complexity: Regular practice with complex text and its academic language. What Are the Shifts at the Heart of PARCC Design (and the Standards)? 13

text complexity 1.PARCC builds a staircase of text complexity to ensure students are on track each year for college and career reading. close reading 2.PARCC rewards careful, close reading rather than racing through passages. academic language 3.PARCC systematically focuses on the words that matter most—not obscure vocabulary, but the academic language that pervades complex texts. Shift 1: complex text Shift 1: Regular practice with complex text and its academic language 14

2. Evidence: Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text, literary and informational. What Are the Shifts at the Heart of PARCC Design (and the Standards)?

citing evidence from texts 4.PARCC focuses on students rigorously citing evidence from texts throughout the assessment (including selected- response items). questions evidence from text(s). 5.PARCC includes questions with more than one right answer to allow students to generate a range of rich insights that are substantiated by evidence from text(s). writing to sources 6.PARCC requires writing to sources rather than writing to de-contextualized expository prompts. narrative writing, 7.PARCC also includes rigorous expectations for narrative writing, including accuracy and precision in writing in later grades. Shift 2:Readingwriting evidence from text Shift 2: Reading and writing grounded in evidence from text, literary and informational 16

3. Knowledge: Building knowledge through content rich nonfiction. What Are the Shifts at the Heart of PARCC Design (and the Standards)?

ELA (English Teachers 6-12) disciplines of science and social studies. 8.PARCC assesses not just ELA (English Teachers 6-12) but a full range of reading and writing across the disciplines of science and social studies. informational sources. 9.PARCC simulates research on the assessment, including the comparison and synthesis of ideas across a range of informational sources. Shift 3: Building knowledge Shift 3: Building knowledge through content rich nonfiction 18
