Knocking on the Door “7: Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened…. 20: Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Matt. 7; Rev. 3). Begin by pointing out the biblical concept of “Knocking on the door.”

Knocking on the Door “Door” stands for: Opportunity (Rev. 3: 8; Matt. 25: 10). Means of entrance (John 10: 9; 14: 6).

Knocking on the Door Jesus is the door: “9: I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture” (John 10). “6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14).

Knocking on the Door Man is the offending party. As such, it is up to man to return: “19: To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20: Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5: 19, 20).

Jesus is knocking: 1. Rev. 3: 20, cp. 22: 17. Knocking on the Door Jesus is knocking: 1. Rev. 3: 20, cp. 22: 17.

Jesus is the only door: 1. John 10: 1-5. Knocking on the Door Jesus is the only door: 1. John 10: 1-5.

Knocking on the Door Man must knock: 1. Matt. 7: 7, 8. Many “accept” Jesus’ role but they deny that many has any real participation. The doctrines of grace only, the irresistible working of the Spirit, etc. all preclude man’s serious involvement.

Man and God, the happy combination! 1. Matt. 7: 7, 8; Rev. 3: 30. Knocking on the Door Man and God, the happy combination! 1. Matt. 7: 7, 8; Rev. 3: 30.

Knocking on the Door How man knocks: Preaching Believed Repented Confessed Baptized Pentecost Believed, 2: 36 Repented, 2: 38 Baptized, 2: 38 Samaria Believed, 8: 12 Baptized, 8: 12 Eunuch Believed, 8: 37 Confessed, 8: 37 Baptized, 8: 38 Saul Baptized, 22: 16 Cornelius Believed, 10: 43 Baptized, 10: 48 Jailer Believed, 16: 31 Repented, 16: 33 Baptized, 16: 33 Lydia Believed, 16: 14 Baptized, 16:15 Preaching Faith Repentance Confession Baptism Rom. 1: 16 Rom. 10: 17 Acts 17: 31 Rom. 10: 9, 10 Gal. 3: 27 Point out that it takes both God and man and man’s role is seen in his required obedience, slide nine.

Believe, repent, Cannot break open Confess, baptism the door! Knocking on the Door Believe, repent, Cannot break open Confess, baptism the door! Slide ten further stresses man’s part.

Knocking on the Door Man must persevere: 1. Luke 11: 5-10. A. Luke 12: 36-40, cp. Jas. 5: 9. Man seems to focus on God’s part to the neglect of man’s duty. God will be faithful in doing his part; when there is failure, it is man’s fault. Hence. The need of emphasizing man’s duty.

Knocking on the Door Conclusion: The open door opportunity can leave: Matt. 25: 10; 2 Cor. 6: 1. Close by pointing out missed opportunities. Show how the scriptures show that man is to avail himself of the present opportunity and not function on the belief of deferring in view of believed future chances. Such is very dangerous, to say the least. Extend the invitation and urge the audience to accept Jesus’ invitation and open the door; thus, allowing his entrance.
