Developing Multisector Collaborations

Multisector collaboration Forming a partnership of: non-profit organizations private organizations public organizations, and community members The purpose is to solve problems that impact the whole community

Characteristics of multisector collaboration Based on cooperation, not competition Allows ordinary people to be decision- makers It can be messy! The investment of time and resources is great, but so are the rewards

Is your community ready for multisector collaboration? Is there a clear need for it? What is the level of trust among the different groups and sectors? Do people agree on what the problem is, or will the problem need to be defined ?

First steps Train leaders in all sectors Identify a facilitator Find the necessary information to understand issues and possible solutions Promote community empowerment

Continuing a multisector collaborative Identify stakeholders Commit to collaboration Establish ground rules Teach process skills Build trust, learn process skills, and explore beliefs Identify problems

Continuing a multisector collaborative (cont.) Clarify a vision and develop a mission statement Keep process open; get input from community Create options for solving problems Formulate goals, objectives, and an action plan
