Common Core Module I Why Common Core?

Common Core – What Do You Know? What do Know about Common Core Standards? What do you want to know about Common Core Standards? Complete the first two columns of the KWL chart and be prepared to share in 5 minutes.

Common Language for Common Core Curriculum –Document that outlines the content that should be taught. Aligned to high stakes assessments (PSSA, NAEP, SAT, ACT) Includes standards statements and performance descriptors. Includes teaching objectives Includes a recommended time frame for teaching

Common Language for Common Core Standards: What students should know and be able to do to be ready to succeed in entry-level credit-bearing, academic college courses and in workforce training programs Eligible Content: the test blueprint; what is assessed

Reviewing Current Literature Take 10 minutes to read the selected article about Common Core Standards. Be prepared to write one statement you think is significant about each section of the article. –Introduction –Federal Intrusion –New Vistas –Preparing Teachers –Waiting for Tests

Hot Potato Share Each teacher will be given an article. The teacher will have 5 mins to read article. You will then take two minutes to write a significant statement about the article on the corresponding piece of paper. After two minutes, the teacher will pass the paper to the left and write his/her next significant statement. This process will continue until all teachers have had an opportunity to write significant statements about each section of the article.
