Successful Grant proposals 鄭先祐 (Ayo) 教授 國立台南大學 生態科學與技術學系 環境生態 + 生態旅遊 碩士班
Successful Grant proposals 1. Specific aims 2. Work out logic before writing 3. Theoretical model driving your research application 4.Literature search 5.Institution grants office 6.Preliminary research 7. Visual impression of your research application 2
1. Specific aims The specific aims of your study are critical and guide the entire development of your proposal. This is the first section in the development of your grant proposal. Your aims should be concise, declarative sentences, and presented first and prominently – preferably as bullets ( 子彈 ). 3
2. Work out logic before writing It is wise to limit your research proposal to two pages until you have worked out the logic of every section of your proposal. People who begin writing before they have solved all of the problems get lost in the words and the reviewer ends up being confused too. 4
3. Theoretical model driving your research application Try to have an implicit theory in the way that you design and organize your research proposal. If you make your theory explicit, it will strengthen your proposal. You can put your theory/model in graphic form that indicates how the constructs that you will be collecting data on fit together. 5
4. Literature search A thorough literature review is important. The reviewers are interested whether you are aware of all the work; if you leave something out, they may feel that you have not conducted an adequate literature review. 6
5. Institution grants office Because the grant is awarded to the institution and not to you, another person that you should meet early in the process of developing your research proposal is the authorized representative/signing office in the institution grants office. 7
6. Preliminary research Describe only the research that has provided you with guidance on how to design and conduct the current study. Briefly describe the study, what you found, and how you have used these findings to develop this proposal. 8
7. Visual impression of your research application Your application should be readable The visual impression of your application is vey important. A picture is worth a thousand words. If you provide a graph or a table, the reviewer can quickly grasp the information that you are trying to convey. 9
