Partner4CS Implementing needed strategies to reach the national CS10K goals for the state of Delaware

National CS10K Project A large-scale, collaborative project bringing together stakeholders from wide- ranging constituencies with the goal of systematically changing the scale, curriculum, and pedagogy of teaching computer science at all levels, but focusing in particular on computer science in U.S. high schools as well as introductory computing at the college level. As part of the systemic changes in teaching computer science the CS10K project aims to have 10,000 teachers in 10,000 high schools teaching a new curriculum by Astrachan, Cuny, Stephenson, Wilson, “The CS10K Project: Mobilizing the Community to Transforma High School Computing”, SIGCSE 2011, ACM.

Why Now? Job growth and underproduction of degrees in CS Growing awareness of pervasiveness of computation Low enrollments in CS NSF commitment to BPC in education & supporting K-12 CS education community expertise (ACM, SIGCSE, CSTA) College Board – AP is key to get it into schools, have fidelity, sustainability, think highly of the courses; developed AP “ CS Principles” Enthusiastic and talented teachers and faculty Industry support

The State of Delaware In 2011: Only 55 G9-12 students took AP CS Only 10 of 60 high schools offered CS AP exam No teacher certification in CS No CS Teachers Association (CSTA) chapter No clear educational path in colleges and universities to prepare future CS teachers

Partner4CS Project Goals To support the CS10K efforts by preparing both G6-12 teachers and students to become creators in computing, and by developing a strong community of university faculty and undergraduates and G6- 12 school teachers in the state of Delaware, which will increase learning and sharing for the sake of G6-12 students.

Meeting the Partner4CS Goals by preparing both G6-12 teachers and students to become creators in computing Developing Professional Development workshops (summer/quarterly Saturday mornings) Establishing ongoing in-classroom teacher support (service learning course) by developing a strong community of university faculty and undergraduates and G6-12 school teachers in the state of Delaware, which will increase learning and sharing for the sake of G6-12 students. Establishing a CSTA chapter in Delaware – F2F Establishing/Maintaining active online Community of Practice support
