Reading and phonics workshop Ivy Gardens Children’s Centre

What will we be doing? How children learn to read and what your role as a parent is in teaching reading. Games and activities to do with reading to help your child at home. Questions and activities to do with your child when reading a book together. Where children need to be a the end of Reception before starting Year 1.

Learning to read ‘Look and say’ Working with the words over and over again until children just ‘know them’. Phonics Using the sounds of the alphabet to ‘sound out’ words. Children learn in different ways and at different rates but it is important that they have exposure to lots of books and reading so their reading skills can develop.

Phonics How you can help your child… Say the sounds correctly, don’t add any ‘errrrrrs’ on the end of sounds as this will confuse children when they start to put sounds together. We teach ‘Jolly Phonics’, resources are available online or from Early Learning Centre. http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/Question/Index/3 Let’s have a go at saying the sounds together.

Segmenting and Blending Once children are confident with their sounds they can start to use them. Segmenting- breaking words up into sounds Blending- put sounds together to make words CVC words…consonant/vowel/ consonant Cat Mum Yes

Difficulties when reading Making a mistake- ‘let’s go back and have another look at that’ Give them a choice, does that say ‘was’ or ‘saw’. Getting stuck- sound it out, given them some thinking time but don’t be afraid to tell them the word! Children can sound out but still can’t read the word- keep going, be patient! Reluctant readers- find a quiet time, find what they love to read, Argos catalogue, books about tractors, reward them! Talk them all the time about how important reading is.

Reading with your child To take home…Top Ten Reading Tips

Reading books We want children to be leaving Reception being able to read at least a red book band book confidently. Let’s look at some red books together and talk about how we can share this with our child To take home…question prompts to use with your child and a reading book

To take home… Word fans Concentrate on a group of words each week, play ‘find me’. Sound out words and talk about ones ‘you just need to know’.
