UNIONS? (pg. 4) 1.What do you think a union is? 2.What are jobs that may be part of a union? Please name at least 3 (ex. Plumber) 3.Why do you think these unions are in place?

 In time towns people throughout Europe gained four basic rights. 1.Freedom-anyone who lived in a town for a year and a day became free, this include serfs who escaped from a manor to a town. 2.Exemption-Townspeople won the right of being exempt, or free, from ever having to work on the manor. 3.Town justice-Towns had their own courts. Leading citizens tried cases that involved Townspeople. 4.Commercial privileges- Townspeople could sell goods freely in the town market. They could also charge tolls to outsiders who wants to trade there.

Merchants Merchant Guild (think a workers union) had the sole right to trade within a town. Other merchants from other places had to pay a fee to trade. The Guild also helped families, loaning money, and helping families that lost a loved one.

Workers Skilled workers joined in a craft guild. Guilds set standards for the work. Apprentice : parents paid to have their child taught a craft by a master. Journeyman : Next step after apprentice, paid by master for work.
