Drafting By Kim Williams ELA5W4 The student consistently uses a writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing. The student Plans and drafts independently and resourcefully.

Primary Learning Outcome The students will write a rough draft of their friendly letter using the graphic organizer from the prewriting stage.

Friendly Letters Friendly letters have five parts: The Heading The Salutation (greeting)  The Body  The Closing The Signature http://jc-schools.net/write/friendly-letters_files/frame.htm

Friendly Letters The Heading The heading can include your address and the date.  In casual, friendly letters your address is not necessary. The Salutation (greeting) Dear_________.  The blank is for the name of the person you are writing.  After you write the person's name you put a comma ( , ) . http://jc-schools.net/write/friendly-letters_files/frame.htm

Friendly Letters The Body The body of the letter is the information you are writing in your letter http://jc-schools.net/write/friendly-letters_files/frame.htm

Friendly Letters The Closing In the closing the first word is capitalized and you put a comma after the last word.   Some examples of closings are:  Sincerely, Your friend, Love, Very truly yours Signature This is your name. It goes under the closing. http://jc-schools.net/write/friendly-letters_files/frame.htm

Drafting This is the second stage of the writing process. Drafting is all about content. Do not be concerned with spelling and punctuation. The purpose of the drafting stage is to turn those words and phrases we wrote during prewriting into full sentences.

They will go to this site and use the interactive website to type a draft of a friendly letter to their partner. Once the first child finishes and prints, the other student will do the same task.

Assessment Activity The students will be given letter stationary and instructed to write a friendly letter. The letter must be written to a real person. It must include details relevant to the content of the letter. It must use the correct “friendly letter” format.
