Danube, dustless road... goes an old Romanian saying. The great river was always a strategic commercial waterway and today Galaţi is Romania's greatest river port.

An important city in the province of Moldavia, Galati has developped on the basis of an ancient Dacian settlement existing in the 6 th century BC on the bank of the Danube river.

Galați grew in importance after the Turks conquered the south east part of the country and played a significant role in domestic trade. In 1789 it was burnt by the Russian armies.

Despite hard times, the city flourished, being famous for its trade and the construction of large ships.

Situated in the South-Eastern part of the country, Galati is a powerful industrial center, a harbour on the Danube, with a rich musical past and a genuine dramatic and lyric theatrical tradition.

Tourists who come to visit our city should take their time to admire the waterfront, churches, parks and museums.
