Comm. & Syst. Planning Review School of Business Eastern Illinois University © Abdou Illia, Fall 2002 (Week 16, Monday 12/09/2002)

Learning Objectives n Learn: – System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) – WAN Connectivity maps – LAN Connectivity maps

Why Communication and System Planning ? n For a computer network be successful: – It has to support current and future amount of traffic – Pay for itself within acceptable amount of time – Provide services necessary to support users of the system

System Development Life Cycle n SDLC: Structured approach for developing software programs n SDLC include: – Planning – Requirement Analysis – Design – Implementation – Maintenance

System Development Life Cycle n Planning Phase: Identify problems, opportunities, and objectives using techniques and methods like meeting with users, interview, data collection and study n Analysis Phase: Determine information requirements. – Information requirements can be gathered by sampling and collecting hard data, interviewing, questionnaires, observing environments, and prototyping n Design Phase: Design the system that was recommended and approved at the end of the analysis phase n Implementation Phase: The system is installed and preparations are made to move from the old system to the new. n Maintenance Phase: The longest phase, involves the ongoing maintenance of the project

Connectivity maps n Many businesses have multiple offices in different locations n Connectivity maps illustrate the network environment for a company n Three type of connectivity maps: – WAN connectivity maps – MAN connectivity maps – LAN connectivity maps

WAN connectivity map Seattle L.A. Chicago Distance = 2250 miles Data rate = 256 Kbps Latency = 200 milliseconds

LAN connectivity map Administration Marketing Distance = 85 meters Data rate = 100 Kbps Security level = Low Duplexity = Full Sales
