Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe. Saint Augustine

Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation. Henry Ward Beecher

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me. And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life. John 5:39-40 (KJV)

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. John 5:39-40 (NIV)

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:37-40 (KJV)

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:37-40 (NIV)

John 5

38 minutes of silence

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Bethesda Pool

38 minutes of illness 38 hours of illness 38 days of illness 38 weeks of illness 38 fortnights of illness 38 months of illness 38 years of illness Porch Pool

The man was sick for 38 years. We were quiet for only 38 minutes. Can you try and describe what the sick man’s life was like? What might be his feelings and thoughts day after day, EVERYDAY? Notice how water has been a consistent part of John’s narrative so far (chp2-4). Is there any particular importance to the healing being by the pool? Where was the pool located near? What day of the week was the miracle performed? John recalls Jesus’ dialogue moving from the miracle of the man by the pool to His own words about resurrection and never dying. Why?

compassion

For anything worth having one must pay the price; and the price is always work, patience, love, self-sacrifice - no paper currency, no promises to pay, but the gold of real service. John Burroughs

Journaling 1. What if you had all power to heal others, but not yourself, how would you live? 2. What if you had only 1 wish that would be granted? How would you use it? 3. What’s the longest time you have ever felt alone or suffered pain? How did that affect your outlook on life (how did you treat other people)? 4. If you had “superpowers”, were hiding out on another planet, and to use those powers you would be discovered, what would you do?

How long had the man been ill? a) 38 feast cycles b) 38 years c) 38 weeks What reason did Jesus give for healing on the Sabbath? a) He works because His father works b) Sabbath was the best day for healings c) He wanted to get the Priests attention Who accuses the Pharisees? a) satan b) Moses c) Jesus

“Accustomed as they had been in Egypt to material representations of the Deity... it was difficult for them to conceive of the existence or the character of the Unseen One. In pity for their weakness, God gave them a symbol of His presence: ‘Let them make Me a sanctuary,’ He said; ‘that I may dwell among them.’ Exodus 25:8” – pg35, Education, pub. 1903

I saw no temple there for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple therein. Revelation 21:22

And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. Luke 2:34-35

THE HOLY PLACE: While the courtyard was the place of sacrifice, the Holy Place was the place of intercession. Only the priests, symbolising Christ, could enter the Holy Place to approach God. The holy place is usually referred to as the first apartment of the sanctuary.
