Presentation transcript:

A library is primarily set up to acquire, organized, store and make accessible to the users, within the quickest possible time all forms of information materials which they Require (Nwalo, 2003).

 Also it is described as a systematic acquisition, organization and dissemination of the books, not mere label distinguishes a library from either a reading room or a storehouse of books.

 Use the Library to Improve Your Organization  Use the Library to Improve Your Learning capability.  To Share Resources in the Library through library cooperation

 Libraries inform their users of what materials are available in their collections and how to access these information.  Before the computer age, this was accomplished by the card catalog  Registration

Card Catalog;- Card Catalog;- The card catalog was the only resources for finding much of the material available in the library. Now, of course, much of the catalog information has become available on computers.

Call Numbers Call Numbers  Each book in the library has a specific number, called a call number. called a call number. New Arrival.  The internet is computer based global information system.  The internet was developed from software called the ARPANET which the U.S military had developed.  It was only restricted to military personnel and the people who developed it.

 Only after it was privatized was it allowed to be used commercially.  The internet is a tool for lifelong learning.  Through the world wide web, a wealth of all resources, not all materials is suitable for all age levels or tastes.

 It is composed of many interconnected computer networks  The internet has brought transformation in many aspects of life  It is one of the biggest contributors in making the world a global village.

 the use of internet has grown tremendously since it was introduced.  Mostly due to its flexibility.

 Access to information  Students can now have access to libraries around the world.  There is accurate and reliable information on the internet

 Some information on the internet are appropriate for academic research.  The internet has brought new opportunities to government, business and education.

 There is also a certain loss of privacy.  Many industries have also suffered loss, especially the music and movie industry i.e. through copyright

 Online chatting also has it own hazards  Much of the information is not scholarly and should not be used for an academic assignment.  Sending a virus on the web has also been another way that peoples’ computer have been infected.

WHAT RESEARCH INFORMATION IS ON THE INTERNET ? - Company reports and financial information - Conference proceedings - Contact details for other researchers

 Laws, government announcements and parliamentary debates  News and current affairs  Databases of reference material  Places where you can discuss topics and ask for help.

 Think about the information you are searching for.  Is it likely to be available for free?  Would a print or other electronic source be more appropriate?  Would it be better to use a search engine or a subject directory?  What words would best describe your subject.

SEARCH ENGINES;- This enables you to search using keywords that describe the subject you are researching.e.g Google METASEARCH ENGINE;- This enables you to search across many search engines at once. e.g. search.com, msn.com, Hinari, and MYNCIB.

 SUBJECT GATEWAYS;- These are organized list of web pages, divided into subject areas. Also known as Directories. e.g. Hinari, Yahoo, highwire etc

 When a search query is typed in the search box  A computer program will begin to search the web  Information found is sent to a central database.  When you enter a search term, you are returning information from this central database.

 Use a search engine (e.g Google: http// when you are looking for: ◦ less common words ◦ Narrow topics and ◦ To return a large number of pages.

 It has a very wide coverage of the web, therefore you will find more materials  Many try to sort materials by how relevant it is to your query.  It offers the opportunity to refine and enhance your search  Many offer links to useful related material  Many offer a directory listing of popular sites

How do they work? * Rather than searching the web, a search request is sent to several other search engines simultaneously. *The results are then compiled into the metasearch engine. * Use a metasearch engine as a starting point when you are looking for a unique word or name or an overview of what is available. E.g.

 Search in many different search engines  Some are able to eliminate duplicate records, or pages on similar topics at the same address.  Some will sort your pages into topics, or will eliminate duplicate pages

 Cannot return too much materials  Because they are searching in many different search engines, all with different rules, complex searching techniques may not be possible.  Some don’t sort the records very well, or will only show some of the search results.
