Measuring Rain Part 4

Daily Objective Meteorologists use rain gauges to measure how much rain or snow has fallen.

Vocabulary Rain gauge - A tool used to measure the amount of rainfall

Introduction Cumulus and Stratus clouds bring rain sometimes. Today we are going to look at a new weather instrument called a rain gauge. This is a tool that is used to measure rain.

Observations and Discussions It needs to be in a place where there isn’t anything hanging over it. An overhang would not allow the gauge to collect all the fallen rain. Where would be a good place to put the rain gauge? The rain gauge catches falling rain. As more rain falls, the water level goes up. The scale on the gauge measures the amount of rain that has fallen. Lets go outside and set up our rain gauge. After it rains we will see how much it has rained.

Vocabulary Review Rain gauge - A tool used to measure the amount of rainfall
