Project undertaken to develop internet resource to monitor local precipitation at NCDOT worksites. State Climate Office (SCO) of North Carolina developed a Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimate (MPE) website for NCDOT – Highway Stormwater Program. Enables engineers to closely monitor estimated precipitation amounts at NCDOT construction sites across the State. User identifies location (lat/long) and receives an alert when precipitation exceeds established thresholds. 720 Active Users. In 2009, NC Division of Water Quality accepted method as alternative to standard rain gauge method for permit compliance.

Efficiencies Gained Over Ground Rain Gage  Notification  Can Identify Multiple Stations on Large Projects  Record Keeping  Provides Rainfall Data for Remote Locations MPE Compares Well with Independent Daily Precipitation Gage Network over NC (error inches over 24-hour period) (Components)
