Beijing’s Olympic Quest : Turn Smoggy Sky Blue The New York Times. 12/29/07 By JIM YARDLEY Jeung Min, Kim

Contents 1.What is the main issue? 2. What is Chinese Government doing for “Green Olympic”, and What are problems caused by those policies? 1)REDUCE pollutants in the air 2)TAKE Pollutant’s MEASURE 3)Only Short-term answers 3. What should be changed?

1.What is the main issue? Opening date of Beijing Olympic Closing date of Beijing Olympic Country of the host city of 2008 Olympic : People’s republic of China However, Beijing has long ranked as one of the world’s most polluted cities Respiratory Problems Impede athletic performance Prevent records from being broken

2. What is Chinese Government doing for “Green Olympic”, and What are problems caused by those policies? 1) Reduce Pollutants in the air How? - Move or close polluting factories - replacing dirty, coal-burning furnaces However, urban boom is intensified by Beijing Olympic Construction↑ Car Ownership↑ Beijing city’s coal consumption ↑ Unwilling to discourage private car ownership Ex) No exorbitant fees ↑ Auto emissions Fine-particle pollution ↑ Public transportation system was neglected for years

2. What is Chinese Government doing for “Green Olympic”, and What are problems caused by those policies? 2) Take Pollutant’s Measure How? - Introduced the Blue Sky Program to measure Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen dioxide, and PM 10 However, there are several problems The Blue Sky program is less harsh and strict than indexes in the U.S Beijing’s biggest problem is from PM 10 and other particulates The program does not measure Ozone and the finer particulates(PM2.5)

2. What is Chinese Government doing for “Green Olympic”, and What are problems caused by those policies? 3) Only Short-term answers Plan 1. to close factories or move them to suburbs Olympics contingency plans have been approved Plan 2. to restrict traffic during the games Last August, The city removed a million cars from roads during a four-day test intended to measure pollution and traffic Example Only Short-term actions

3. What should be changed? Beijing’s future population that may exceed 20 million people how to reconcile fast economic growth with environmental protection Short-term answersLong-term answers You should consider Beijing’s geography – surrounded by mountains / have strong winds
