Course overview Prevention of Postpartum Hemorrhage Initiative (POPPHI) Project PATH KwaZulu Natal DOH Path/Durban The Atlantic Philanthropies

Goals and objectives By the end of the 5-day course, future AMTSL mentors will be able to: Provide safe, respectful, and friendly care to women, newborns, and their families, thereby encouraging mothers and families to utilize the health care system with confidence. Follow an evidence-based protocol for safe care during AMTSL and during the immediate postpartum period, including clear guidelines on when to refer mothers with complications, ensuring timely action is taken. Provide greater protection from infection for their clients and themselves. Store uterotonic drugs to maintain their potency. Guide learners through the blended learning materials for training in AMTSL.

Criteria for competency - AMTSL clinical instructors 80% on mid-course questionnaire Participants will re-take the mid-course questionnaire if they receive <80% If they receive <80% on the second mid-course questionnaire, they will discuss with facilitators on the course of action 80% on assessment of clinical skills on an anatomic model 80% on assessment of clinical skills in the clinical area

Learning approach AMTSL mentors complete the group-based TOT AMTSL mentors guide learners through the blended learning materials: Self-paced learning (SPL) component for the theoretical portion combined with Clinical practicum for the clinical portion AMTSL mentors and learners work together to monitor progress and assure quality of care at their site

Trainers update the mentors’ knowledge and skills Trainers evaluate if the mentors are practicing to standard Mentors incorporate new standards into practice Mentors support providers at the site using the mixed learning approach 4 Trainers evaluate the site and all providers giving care during labour and childbirth Providers incorporate new standards into practice 5 5 days 2-3 wks 2 wks 2-3 wks
