3.2 and 3.3 Energy Flow and Cycles of Matter

Food Webs  Has multiple food chains within  Food Chain only shows one way flow  Arrow points to direction of energy flow  Each step in food web/chain= trophic level  EX: Producers (meadow grass), Primary consumer (caterpillar), secondary consumer (Lizard), Predator (Bird)

Identify the Trophic Levels Listed in this food web

Ecological Pyramids  Diagram that shows how energy and matter move through an ecosystem 1. Energy Pyramid: only 10% of energy available can be transferred 2. Biomass Pyramid: total amount of “tissue” per trophic level (ex: there is more mass for producers than for primary consumers) 3. Numbers Pyramid: shows actual numbers of organisms, decrease as you go up trophic levels (usually less predators per prey)

ID the Pyramids

Cycles of Matter  All show how elements are recycled in the environment  Water Cycle  Carbon Cycle  Nitrogen Cycle  Phosphorus Cycle  Fixation: Chemical reaction that changes a compound into a usable form

Cycles and Pyramids  *Be able to describe what happens and WHY its important

Can You Fill In the Bubbles for the Water Cycle?

What Cycle is this? Fill in the boxes.

Identify this Cycle. Fill in the boxes.
