Do Now: Please take out your notebook and a pen Ms. Edelman Technology Aim: How can I use type to express movement and rhythm?

Rhythm is the principle of art that indicates movement by the repetition of elements or objects. You can hear rhythm in music and poetry. In visual rhythm, you receive through your eyes rather than through your ears. Visual rhythm is created by repeated positive shapes separated by negative spaces. The repeated shapes are like the beats in music. Visual rhythms create a sensation of movement.

On a two dimensional work, the entire visual repetition is called a pattern. Pattern is the principle of art that is concerned with decorative surface design. The unit that is repeated in a visual pattern is called a motif. Sometimes, every motif is an exact duplicate of the first unit; other times, the repetitions vary from the original.

What are some ways you can use type to express visual rhythm? 1.Repetition 2.Font Styles - Bold, Light, Italic, etc 3.Color Fill and Stroke 4.Space between letters and/or words 5.Type effects - 3d, warping, etc 6.Curving and rotating type

Area TypeVertical Area Type

Here is an example of Area Type inside a Polygon Shape. First use the shape tool to create the shape, then select the Area Type Tool and click on the border of the shape. Your cursor will appear inside the shape, then simply begin typing.

1.Research your favorite song. Write down some of the lyrics. 2.Open a Letter size document in Illustrator 3.Access the Type tool. Type out the lyrics from your song. 4.Create your own paths using the pen, pencil and brush tools to show the rhythm and movement of your song. Think about the music: Is it fast or slow? heavy or light? what colors do you think of? 5.Use the various type tools, color, strokes and effects to express the visual rhythm of your song. 6.Save as ‘YourName_music. pdf’ Project Due: Monday, May 7th
