The Composition of the US Congress There are 100 senators and 435 representatives. There are 2 senators from each state. The number of representatives for each state depends on it’s population. It varies between 1 and 53 representatives. The senators are elected for a period of 6 years and the representatives, for 2 years.

The 2008 Elections In the House of Representatives, the Democrats have a majority of 54%. On November 4, 2008, there will be elections for all seats (for the period). In the Senate, there will be voting to elect 34 of the 100 Senators. Of the 34 seats, 21 right now are held by Republicans, and 12 by the Democratic Party.
