What is a noun?  A noun is a word group that is used to name a person, place, thing, or idea.  person Ex: Sheala loves playing soccer.  place Ex: Disney World is the happiest place on earth.  thing Ex: Bicycles are on sale at Wal-Mart.  Idea Ex: Happiness is essential to healthy living.

Types of Nouns  compound  proper  common

Compound Nouns  A compound noun is a single noun made up of two or more words used together.  one word= daydream, homework  hyphenated= brother-in-law, self-esteem  two words= Jenny Craig, family time

Look at the nouns in these sentences  My brother’s favorite store is Foot Locker.  J.F. Drake is the only public middle school in Auburn.  Learning how to tie my shoelaces is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.  If we earn enough R.O.A.R. bucks, I can sit wherever I want in the lunchroom.

Proper Nouns  A proper noun names a person, place, thing or ideas and begins with a capital letter.  Proper noun examples: Barack Obama, Indonesia, McDonalds, Eleanor Roosevelt, Texas, City Stages

Common Nouns  Common nouns name any one group of persons, places, things or ideas. It is usually not capitilized.  Ex: man, state, country, county, team, teacher, artist, book.
